Half the secret of sharpening is the control of blade geometry. nothing is handier than a bevel gauge for quickly checking the grind angle of chisels, plane blades, turning tools, etc. a quick check confirms the angle last used for grinding or honing so that the edge geometry can be maintained. Our bevel gauge has seven individual slots that will measure the most commonly used angles from 15° to 45° in 5° increments. your eye is a fine instrument; it can easily interpolate other angles in the range, angles like 24° or 26°. The slots on the gauge are about 3/4" deep for good registration. the pocket-sized disc is 2-1/2" in diameter with a center hole for hanging it on a nail. made of solid brass, which will not damage a honed edge.    More...

This cabinet scraper is a very useful and versatile tool. used in place of a much heavier belt sander, it can clean a dirty workbench top, remove dried glue and smooth a panel or tricky grain tabletop efficiently, leaving behind a surface free of tear-out, digs or gouges. We have designed this tool with several improvements over what is usually known as the no. 80 cabinet scraper. to allow the user to apply pressure directly in line with the cutting edge and prevent the blade catching when the scraper runs off the end of the workpiece, the sole is longer and the handles have been placed further back and slightly lower than seen in other scrapers. The blade is 2-3/4" wide with both edges ground at 45° so that the tool may have two cutting edges prepared at once, thus halving the number of sharpening sessions. the casting is shaped to protect both the upward-facing cutting edge and the user from accidental damage. Made from ductile cast iron, the scraper will stand up to robust use. the sole is surface ground for accuracy. two screws secure the blade, and the integral thumbscrew is used to set blade camber. the sole is 3-3/16" long, 3-3/8" wide. overall length is 11-1/2". weighs about 1 lb, 10 oz. This jig will not only do centered dowelling, but it will dowel boards of different thicknesses to one reference face – the assembly is perfectly flat on one side and all thickness variations are on the other side. this saves a lot of planing and scraping time. Using a dial, each micrometer clamp head can be set from 1/4" (6mm) to 1/2" (13mm) from the center line to handle work from 1/2" to 1" thick. the setting is positive and accurate to a few thousandths of an inch. the movable clamp heads will grip work as small as 1/2" x 1-3/8". With boards of constant thickness, you can set the jig for centered dowelling. for boards of uneven thickness, you set the heads for a constant set back from the reference face. By using the tapered pin to register off the last hole drilled, you can quickly chain drill dowel holes for tabletops or panels. the movable bush carrier comes with 3 hardened steel bushings: 1/4", 8mm ( 5/16"), and 3/8". other sizes are available. all turnings are solid brass. machined parts are anodized aluminum.    More...

Drilling 35mm holes for cup hinges is usually done on a specially jigged drill press in a small shop, or on a very expensive machine in a large shop. this hand-held boring jig out performs both in its speed and its versatility. The precision-cast aluminum alloy frame incorporates a depth-adjustable carbide-tipped bit with outlining spurs for clean holes in solid wood, veneers, or melamine-covered material. the micrometer fence screws let you dial any backset up to 12mm, and an integral rule makes it easy to set the depth of cut up to 16mm; both dimensions cover all 35mm cup hinges available. In addition, a set of spacers, which let you drill for flap hinges (with breakout up to 10mm), is included. the 1/4" hex drive lets you use a quick-change chuck or a hex-head socket powered by an electric drill. the stop rod is usable left or right handed. The base plate is countersunk for most common cup-hinge screw holes; these can be drilled quickly using the same fence and rod stop settings as used for the cup holes. A commercial sharpening service or a sophisticated home grinder is necessary for badly nicked blades. the veritas® jointer blade sharpener is designed to restore blades dulled from normal use, even if they contain minor nicks. It clamps blades up to 8" wide (including hand-plane blades) for sharpening on psa-backed abrasives. just stick the abrasive to a flat surface (plate glass works well), adjust the elevating screw until the bevel is flat on the abrasive, and use it as you would any other honing guide. after basic sharpening, switch to a fine abrasive, and hone a fine micro-bevel. two position stops ensure successive blades are honed identically. it is both easy and effective, letting you quickly restore blades that you would probably let become far duller before sending out for service.
